Please tell us about mBit?
Singapore-based mBit Infotech Pvt Ltd, is a joint venture between VASSoft.net and mBit Pte. Ltd.
mBit Infotech is the first company that is providing mobile peer to peer (P2P) services. This new application promises to introduce users to different mobile applications like media sharing, search and download from mobile phones of the same peer. In addition, the search option in the application allows users to search for advertisements and music/videos with existing mobile content store.
What are the prospects of P2P?
From the mobile perspective P2P (Peer To Peer) is a new concept altogether. We think that the pattern of the Internet world will get reflected in this medium also. Users today are highly mobile and expect to have access to information and entertainment on-the-move. An application like this will certainly enable them to download, upload and share information with their peer group. This is going to be an extremely useful application for the ever increasing mobile workforce and the youth. We think that depending on the network, P2P file share traffic would be between 50 per cent and 90 per cent.
What is your marketing strategy for P2P and how do you plan to attract mobile phone users to this app?
We are hosting a series of competition starting with BITS Goa. You can find details at http://www.bits-quark.org/fixmbit. Such competitions work nicely to reach out to desired users by the traditional word of mouth route.
What is your current user base?
We have over one lakh users at present.
What kind of speed can GPRS provide on the P2P application?
Mobile P2P is a hybrid of technologies that can work on a speed of 20-70 kbps.
Is there any limitation on the file that can be uploaded and downloaded? There is no size limitation as such in the system.
What is the minimum requirement to run P2P on mobile?
The mobile handset needs to support GPRS and should be J2ME compatible. Other flavours of applications also work in and over Symbian 3.0 and above edition.
